Three Dark Crowns

Read: 10/19-10/26

This was book that I heard about through one of the young adult book websites I follow. I got an email about it and the premise caught my attention. So much so that I didn’t wait very long to read it once I purchased it. It also helped that I was still looking to read books fit for the Halloween mood.

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake is about three triplets who were born to fight to the death. Each sister is born with a different gift. Katherine can ingest any poison without getting sick. Arsinoe can control plants and animals. Mirabella can control all the elements. Only one of them can be queen so they must participate in a battle to the death to determine the next queen.

I enjoyed this book for the most part. It went in a different turn than I was expecting it to. I thought it would focus on the battle and the girls would be determined to take out their sisters. However, it focused on the months leading up to the battle and the sisters were not the cold hearted killers I was expecting. It is also the first in a series which I was not expecting but once I realized that it explained why the plot moved the way it did. However, the twist at the end was a little predictable. I was able to guess it and I think most people would be able to figure it out.

The one thing I did not like about the book was the character development. Yes, I know that is usually the thing that I don’t end up liking about a book. I really enjoyed each of the sister’s development. I felt like they all showed some depth that can definitely be expanded throughout the series. However, I do not feel that their relationships with the other characters and the other characters themselves were developed very well. Because of this it felt like some of the actions of the characters did not make sense.

Overall I enjoyed this book and I am excited for the sequel to come out to how this is going to turn out. I would recommend this for someone looking for a fun read.

  1. I have heard very similar reviews about this book. I think one of the critiques was that it was hard to follow since there were so many characters but overall, readers seemed to enjoy it. I have heard cases where some people predicted the ending and others have not so I am quite curious about it. Thank you for a great review! Hopefully, I will pick it up soon!
